10,00 Maniacs - Our Time In Eden

10,000 Maniacs - Our Time In Eden

Tonight I thought I'd pull out this gem. This album has been one of my very favorite albums since 1997, when I listened to it at least once a day. Such amazingly gifted musicians fill the grooves of this disc (okay, I know... no grooves here, but you get my meaning). The whole band sound just phenomenal. And Natalie? Not a finer female vocalist can be found on this planet. Just a fantastic album, and it still sounds just as fresh as when it was originally released.

Flying Colors - Second Nature

Flying Colors - Second Nature

After digesting this album for a couple weeks, all I can say is that this is a masterpiece. It was going to be tough for the band to top their debut, but I believe they have done it. I love this album. Such an eclectic set, and for me, and even more tasty prog bits to satisfy the prog geek in me.

Favorite 3 Tracks:
"The Fury of My Love", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Mask Machine"

Spock's Beard - Snow

Spock's Beard - Snow

Not since the Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" has a singer left a band in such fine fashion, with a double disc concept album. "Snow" was the last album from Spock's Beard to feature the bands primary writer and vocalist Neal Morse (a man that can do no wrong, musically, in my book).

The story tells of an albino man that can touch others, and see the future, no matter how bleak those futures may be. The music on the album is all prog, and a beautifully crafted piece of magnificence.

This has long been a favorite album of mine, and one that I go back to quite often. One day, I hope that the band will reunite to perform this masterpiece front to back... ahh the dreams of a prog fanatic.

Altura - Mercy

Altura - Mercy

During the last couple years of the 90's, I was really starting to get into Prog. And at one point, I found myself trying to snatch up any album that I could find on the "Magna Carta" label. I was lucky enough that my girlfriend at the time (who is now my wife) bought this disc for me (the first thing that she ever bought for me). I was immediately blown away by the music on this album. Very heavy, very prog, and just what I was looking for. I don't believe there was ever a follow up disc from these guys, but this has been a long time favorite in my collection (even if I don't listen to it as often as I should).

Favorite 3 Tracks: "Horizons Fade", "One By One", "The Calling"

So, I have moved my annoyingly charming status update posts to a specialized page on facebook, where only those that choose to read my crap will see it. I suppose I do this for the people. And those few that complained that I post too much. What can I say, I get really bored. Don't worry, you don't mind. If you are reading this, you are clearly my friend, and I love you for it. I love you long time.

I guess all of this is to say that the blog here is going to be largely geared towards my music interests... which is a HUGE part of my life. So you'll be seeing plenty from me still. Phew.

American Mary

I picked this movie at random, on Netflix. So far, and I'm not that far in it, it's starting to get really weird. I'm going to post some random thoughts, so this isn't really a review, so much as what some of the scenes make me feel like writing.

I must warn you that if you are interested in seeing this movie to stop reading now. Why?
Because SPOILERS!

The movie starts off with a woman going to medical school, and really in financial troubles. Phone being shut off, losing her job. It's quite a common thing these days. Money is bullshit. Mary goes for a job as a stripper, but ends up doing an unlicensed surgery on a man that's being tortured, and that's when things get strange.

A group of people into body modifications gets her number. A lady that looks like a real life Betty Boop contacts her about doing a mod on her friend. This woman, who looks like a Barbie doll, wants her nipples removed and her vagina closed up (as much as she can), so that she's not looked at as an object of sex. "Mary" is working on cutting off the nipples, and closing up the vagina right now, and it's making me "twitchy". After the surgery, she instructs the patients' friend to not contact her again. She contacts her again.

- A doctor, her teacher, just used the phrase "Cunts and runts". I don't know why, but that sort of amused me.

She's invited to a party with some of her instructors and other doctors, and so far I think it's foreshadowing something creepy and macabre. The guys at the party are really giving me a "I'm going to poison your drink and fuck you up" vibe. And... yep. Her drink was drugged. Wow, how unpredictable. It would seem that the reason for Mary's invite to the party was for her dirt-ball instructor, Dr. Grant, to drug and rape her. I'm going to go out on a limb her, and predict that Mary will be giving this man some involuntary body modifications later on in the movie.

And of course, I was right. She hired some seedy characters to abduct the asshole, and now he's tied up, and she is practicing some really neat body mods on the guy. Unfortunately we don't get to see much, as the scene cuts to her running her own body mod practice. And, in a completely expected twist, Mary is being investigated over the disappearance of the instructor. Good lord, movies are so uniform these days.

Two annoying German women, twins, now want a body mod. They want to trade left arms... and a few other very strange things. And after that, we finally see Dr. Grant again, who is hanging by hooks in a basement, hooks that are piercing through the skin on his back. He's not looking like he's doing so good. But as far as I'm concerned, this rapist piece of crap deserves it. And it looks like she's not done using him as her test subject. After beating a meddling security guard to death with his own nightstick, I'm starting to think that Mary may have had some psychological issues for a while.

- Nana died. I think this is probably going to make Mary a lot worse than she already was.

It would seem like the husband of the now nipple-less girl, does not like his women without nipples and a penetrable vagina. He attacked "Barbie Girl", and was waiting for Mary when she came home. Mary is now crawling to her operating room, covered in blood, and it looks like the crazy bitch is dying. Kind of sad, I loved Mary. She mad me happy, and reminded me of a more simple time in my life. But wait... she's stitching herself up... maybe... nope, Mary is dead.

Good-bye Mary. I love you. We'll meet again my friend, some day soon... Wait, that's Victoria.
As far as your movie... um... predictable, but entertaining enough to keep me awake. I give it 3 stars out of ten (and an extra half of a star for cutting Dr. Grants legs off, cause that shit was funny).

Status Updates (Sept. 22nd & 23rd)

This is a picture of the one guinea baby that does not yet have a name. All five of the babies are doing great, and are so cute. It's a bit crowded in their cage, so we're going to have to try and get another one as soon as possible, but they all seem to be happy, and growing. Anyhow... here are your status updates:

01 - Busy day today. We had to take Robbie out for his birthday, and I did plenty of walking, and even an extra walk around the park. The fun never stops.

02 - Getting some work done and listening to Mr. the Loaf.

03 - You can't replace your feelings with the ones who choose to stay.

04 - Well, I didn't really have much to say tonight. Was busy. Worked most of the night, and wrote lyrics for two new Liberty's Exiles song. Good night.

Meat Loaf - Couldn't Have Said It Better

Meat Loaf - Couldn't Have Said It Better

Sometimes you just need to listen to some Meat Loaf. This is easily my favorite Meat Loaf album. So much great music, and without the help of Mr. Jim Steinman (which surprises me on quite a few of these songs, as they have Steinman written all over them... especially the title track and "Did I Say That"). With material every bit as good as the first two "Bat" albums, I've always been surprised that this one didn't get more attention than it did. Another masterpiece. This a great album from start to finish, and further proof that Meat Loaf is one of the greats. After this album, Meat's voice was a bit hit or miss, but for this album, his voice was still perfect.

Don't get me wrong on that last statement... I've loved his voice on every album. It just gets weaker with age, and he is certainly not getting any younger (despite my petitions to make that happen).

Favorite 3 Tracks: "Couldn't Have Said It Better", "Love Your Out Loud", "You're Right, I Was Wrong"

Flying Colors - Self Titled (debut)

Flying Colors - Self Titled (debut)

From the first time I heard this disc, I knew it was something special. The songs are not exactly what you would expect from a team featuring Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy, but this album is damned near perfect. The music is hard rock and even poppy at points, and every song is a winner in my book. There are some great proggy sections thrown in as well, but with MP, NM, and Steve Morse, it is to be expected. Primary vocalist, Casey McPherson sounds phenomenal, and has quickly catapulted way up on my favorite singers list (though, no one could replace Neal Morse at the top, so I'm happy that he has plenty of singing sections on this album). Round out the line up with Dave LaRue on the bass guitar, and you have an amazing super group, with a masterpiece debut.

The follow up album, "Second Nature", will be released here in the states September 30th... can't wait to feast my ears on more new Flying Colors. Amazing band!

Favorite 3 Songs: "Blue Ocean", "The Storm", "Infinite Fire"

Eluveitie - Origins

Eluveitie - Origins

I wasn't sure I should get this one, but after hearing "The Call of the Mountain" I knew that even if it were the only song I liked on the disc, it would be worth the price of admission. I'm on the first listen now, and though the vocals so far are the growls that I'm not a huge fan of, I'm actually really enjoying it. Still, the clean vocals on this album are really amazing. She has a great voice!

Favorite 3 Tracks: "The Nameless", "The Call of the Mountains", "Vianna",

Status Updates (Sept. 21st & 22nd)

Well, since I took a two day weekend, I am way behind on work for this weekend. As a result, I started at about 1pm, and am still not half way done. It's going to be a long night. So, here are my "status updates" for this work shift.

01 - Last night was nice though. We took a very long walk, and it was nice spending some time with my family (though I acted like an ass when Samantha fell and got hurt). Robbie and I walked around 7 miles, while the girls only walked about 4, because we didn't think that Samantha could make the walk back to the car. My legs were on fire, but it was well worth it, just to get that much exercies in.

02 - Why can't you see what we had, let the fire burn the ice? Where's the love we once had, is it all a lie? And I still wonder why Heaven has died. The skies are falling, I'm breathing but why? In silence I hold on to you and I.

03 - It is impossible to say "Hi, this is Robert" without sounding like I'm gay. So screw you Janae, Dereke, and Tonya! lol

04 - I sneezed and nobody said "God bless you". By this time tomorrow, I'm fairly certain that I will be the Leprechaun's bitch.

05 - Janae just wiped something on me. I don't know what it was, but she will pay!

06 - I like to get a glass of ice water, and then wait for the ice to melt before I drink it. It is at this point that the water has gained perfection, and it makes my mouth happy.

07 - I pee, freely.

08 - I just walked about a mile and my right leg is in agony. It didn't even hurt this bad during a seven mile walk yesterday. I really need to get in shape. That's what I get for lazing around the last year.

09 - Personally, I am against abortion, and would never even consider this option. But, it's not my place to tell others what to choose, and how to live their lives.

10 - Didn't make 10,000 steps today. My right leg is just too pissed off. Hopefully we'll be back in it tomorrow!

11 - I think I'm going to become a male stripper. If ladies want a pale skinned, overweight, ginger and kind of grouchy dancer, then I'm their guy!

12 - What do we need a stripper for? We got a giant cake.

13 - Where exactly can I find the street of "Downtown Suck-It"?

14 - Watching "Elysium" cause I had my son borrow it from the library a month ago, and we're going to have to take it back soon.

15 - I am Matt Damon, and you are not.

16 - My son is 13 years old today. I am the father of a teenager. Damn I'm old.

17 - Why is it that I ignore the action scenes in movies? And yet, I still watch action movies. It's like a complete waste of time in some movies, yet I still watch them. I'm quite the rare bird of a strange flock of dying breed of birds.

18 - Why are so many humans so terrible? Why are we such an evil / hateful race?

19 - "Elysium" wasn't too bad. Now I'm watching some crappy sci-fi, end of the world movie, called "Parts Per Billion". I like end of the world movies, so I'm hoping that this one is, at the very least, entertaining. Plus... it has Rosario Dawson.

20 - I still maintain that, though it may be horrifying and terrible, living through an apocalyptic event would be exciting.

21 - Well, "Parts Per Billion" was not a horrible movie. A bit jumpy though. Now I'm doing a short episode of ViaMental, while playing Diablo 3 for a while. Then, once the kids are out the door, hopefully the wife lets me get a nap in.

fin.

Happy 13th Birthday To My Son Robert (Robbie) Mallory Jr.

Happy Birthday Robbie!

13 years ago today, my son was born. He was the first of my three children, and obviously the first to make me a father. Fatherhood has been the best experience of my life, and to see this boy grow up to such an amazing young man has been a gift from the Heavens.

I love you Robbie, more than you could ever know. Happy Birthday buddy!

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand

I found this at a yard sale on Friday for a quarter, and I do like Robert Plant's voice, so I figured I needed to buy it. I haven't heard anything from this before, so this is the first listen. I'm on the first track ("Rich Woman"), and so far it's a bit quiet and slow, but that's not a bad thing. On to "Killing the Blues"... so far, so good.

edit: People coming to hear something in the vein of Led Zeppelin will be sorely disappointed. If you come into this because you love Plant's voice, then you're going to be pleased. For the most part, the music is very mellow and country in sound. Some great acoustic music, and amazing vocals from both singers here.

Favorite 3 Songs (after one listen): "Gone Gone Gone Done Moved On", "Through the Morning, Through the Night", "Please Read the Letter"

Within Temptation - Hydra

Within Temptation - Hydra

I must admit that I haven't played this disc very much since I bought it on release day. I loved it the first time I heard it, but hop around my CD collection so much, that sometimes I forget to come back to some discs. I decided to go ahead and pull this one out and take another listen. The weird thing is that in the context of this music, I really like what rapper Xzibit does on "And We Run", and I generally hate rap. I must say that I love this band, and Sharon den Adel has some of the best vocals that I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Great band!

Favorite 3 Songs: "Let Us Burn", "Paradise (What About Us?)", "Whole World Is Watching"

Within Temptation - The Unforgiving

Within Temptation - The Unforgiving

I picked this up at Wal-Mart on a whim. I'd never heard of them, but the cover seemed intriguing (and not just the hot animated ginger!). When I played it the first time, I was blown away. Damn what a great album this is. Such amazing music, beautiful vocals, and a great story. It's no wonder that I've come back to it time and again over the years.

Top 3 Songs: "Shot In the Dark", "Faster", "Iron"

Queensryche - Mindcrime At the Moore

Queensryche - Mindcrime At the Moore

So, the first "Operation:Mindcrime" disc is an absolute classic. An amazingly well written, and beautifully played progressive rock, concept album. And though it's been played in its entirety many times (and better!), this is still a pleasing performance to my ears. Tate's voice isn't what it once was, and DeGarmo is obviously not in attendance, but it's still a decent enough performance. (I could do without the cheesy dialogue though... and the terrible audio issues on the vocals during "My Empty Room")

"Operation: Mindcrime 2" is a damned fine album, written by a band that have been hit and miss for quite a number of years. It's not even in the same league as the first, but still some great tunes, and playing on the album. And this live performance is quite an enhancement to that. Okay, so the story line is a bit unbelievable at times, but I can forgive that.

Not a bad way to spend a couple hours of my life, listening to this killer live set.

Garage Sale Find (Sept. 2014)

There was a yard sale across the street from us that was selling CD's 4 for $1 today. Not a bad haul for just a quarter (yes, there is a Celine Dion one there, but I like her... yeah, you heard me!). So, anyway, I may have an addiction.

Rush - Clockwork Angels

Rush - Clockwork Angels

It's hard to believe that this album is already more than two years old. It seems like just a couple of months ago that this masterpiece was finally delivered to us from the Canadian trio. And though I may have played this album hundreds of times, it is just as good to me now, as it was on the day of its initial release.

Although Rush released "Caravan" and "BU2B" the year before, in the months leading up to their "Time Machine" tour, and "Headlong Flight" a month or so before the release of the album, I heard no other songs from this disc prior to its release. With each new release, it is possible that Rush were releasing their final album, and I wanted to delay my listening of the disc until I could hold the physical copy in my hands.

I still remember that first listen through of the album, with my headphones on, and a huge smile plastered across my face, as I listened to my favorite band deliver song after song of that classic Rush sound. And when I say classic, I mean the hard edged stuff from their early days, the emotional, synth driven pieces of the 80's, and more of that focused sound from their latter years. Here they combined it all in what is still one of my favorite albums from them to this day.

Favorite 3 Tracks: "Clockwork Angels", "The Wreckers", "The Garden"

ViaMental Outro (The New One)

Top 5 Favorite Genesis songs.

1: Domino
Okay, so it may be blasphemous to some people to choose a post Gabriel era track as my number one favorite, but this song is just such a killer track. It's got everything I love in a prog tune. Multiple moods and changes, great lyrics, and fantastic music.
2: Supper's Ready
This song is so close behind "Domino", that it damned near wants to be my number one favorite. This is probably one of the best epic prog tunes to ever be written. This was back when the band were really full blown proggers, and it shows in this twenty-three minute track. Such a powerful song, both instrumentally, and vocally.

3: Dancing With the Moonlit Knight
Another Gabriel era song, and it's a killer tune that leads off this masterpiece of an album. Some beautiful vocals open this bombastic classic, with plenty of insane instrumental work throughout.

4: Dance On A Volcano
The opening cut to the first album to feature Phil Collins as the lead vocalist for the entire disc. This song starts with perhaps some of my favorite guitar work, and only soars ever higher from there. Another kill song instrumentally, and the "new guy" isn't have bad behind the mic either.

5: Fading Lights
Though I love everything about this song, it's the lyrics and the emotional delivery from Phil that really makes the song something special to me. It may not be that classic prog sound, but for me, this song is better every time I hear it.

Status Updates (Sept. 18th & 19th)

Well, work is going to suck major shit tonight. Probably going to be the worst night so far. Damn I hate (and am grateful for) political season.

We had to take Robbie (my son) to an allergist today, so I didn't get to bed early enough, and only slept about six hours. So I haven't even started work yet. Anyhow... the lasers from my eyes are pretty bad ass.

01 - The part of my wrist the rests on my desk is hurting like hell on both hands. Hurry the hell up November!

02 - From now on I want to be called "Street Prostitute" Rob. Get on that.

Status Updates ( Sept. 17th & 18th)

So... for the first time doing this, I didn't get around to writing this intro bit until after three am. Now, this is really not significant in any way, but I thought I would pad the intro by mentioning it.

Not much to mention today, and I really don't have all that much input to say on this, but I like to stick to tradition, so here it is:

01 - The way that schools teach math these days is fucking stupid. What was wrong with the easy one step process we had when we were growing up? Now it's some long, drawn out, convoluted process that is just insanely ridiculous!

02 - I got a sugar free cappuccino, and an energy drink. It's time to do this night like the dirty whore that it has always been.

03 - To the person that taught my son "two for flinching"... I will eat your fucking babies!

04 - I'm the most impressive person no one's ever really seen.

05 - Anybody else notice how much the average length of movies has changed in the last decade or two? They used to run about an hour and a half, and now if I see a movie that short, I think it's a rip off to go see it in the theaters.

06 - Three people playing keyboards at the same time, on one song? Yes, this is prog! And this is the mighty Spock's Beard!

07 - My ass is so sweaty and itchy.

08 - I'm not sure I want him to deal with a giant butterfly.

09 - I'm too numb from my hellish life to feel the pain.

10 - There's an episode in season seven of "That 70's Show" where they are opening a record store. Every record that I can see is clearly not in very new condition. Just thought that was funny.

11 - There is a cricket in my office. Mother-fuck! A cricked! And the little son of a bitch is impossible to find and will not shut the flying fuck up!

12 - Any time I read an article from "Blabbermouth", I'm immediately skeptical as to whether or not what they wrote is what the artist said, or if they are just trying to start shit. I've read to many bullshit articles with too much take out of context to completely believe what they publish.

13 - "Distance can be measure by the pain you feel inside your heart. We could be together or be five million miles apart. It wouldn't stop me."

14 - Urgh... I accidentally "left game" in Diablo before turning in my "rift quest" to that Orek guy. Dammit, that's just annoying! Anyhow, going to try to go up to "Torment 2", and see if I get my ever loving ass kicked. I'm at 69 (hehe) Paragon.

Thank you very much, good-night.
